FLOTATION is a work that harbors somewhere between the alternative reality of archaeology, nature, and myth. It stems from my fascination with an island's unique and universal characteristic, understood as a psychological typology that simultaneously breeds a diverse and insular cultural interpretation of the world.
Due to their geological isolation from neighboring continents, islands have constantly invented a narrative through their oral tradition. Some are referential; some are uniquely autonomous. Some are real; some are not. Many stories have been created and told…
The genesis of such narratives can often be traced back to a simple relationship of subject-object matter as a source from which we construct our fictional reading. My initial research intended to identify potential dynamic conditions that can present themselves as sources of reading.
Random piles of objects are constantly being washed to the shores of Cheung Chau Island, making the island a collector of objects of unknown origins. I only selected wooden objects to be examined from the debris to illuminate the ever-changing cycle of life they live through; one day, it is a chair, and another day, it is a box…
Saltwater strips and bleaches all things that float back to unrecognizable origins, transforming all objects to the indifferent state from their intended design at birth. It gives an ambiguous sense of time and place, which we may or may not be able to piece together again; they are associative and disconnected at the same time.
The final output of work has been framed as a condition of suspense in both physical and conceptual terms, aimlessly guiding our memory and consciousness into a deep abyss of untold folklore.
