WHAT IS IT?

活動室 (Wut Tung Sat) is a new platform space on the island of Peng Chau. Peng Chau is located northeast of Lantau Island, with an area of 0.99 km2 and a population of 7,000. Wu Tung Sat is situated at the border of a busy alleyway filled with shops. It also opens into a small public square. WHAT WE DO?

Based on this clear condition of the space and its surrounding context, it is easy to see how it can be developed with typified and predictable programs that suit the area. Instead, we decided to challenge ourselves. We took a moment to reflect on our experience of working and living in Hong Kong today, which has some specificity. However, it is still a part of the more prominent modern society, i.e., the capitalist economy. We choose to become our client and architect to design and utilize the space, and conceiving this dual role has enabled us to adjust our focus to “experience” rather than consuming goods. Therefore, Wu Tung Sat is the space that produces actions that carry out our idea of the experiment.

The context of Peng Chau as a small universe of many constellations will become our constant reference point. We want to produce knowledge and create a body of research work that addresses and reveals this. Other initiatives will take place to connect different moments, whether it is a form of service, exchange, production, debate, etc. Our space will function as an integral place to facilitate all of these activities, and this congestion and diversity of experience is how we want to measure our success.
